about

THIS EP IS PAY WHAT YOU CAN, BUT RAISING MONEY FOR MC ISHU'S IMMIGRATION FIGHT, ALL INFO BELOW. ONE LOVE!

An extra-special delivery: six tracks of pure dancehall & reggae inspired heat from Senseless Records original Dafoe and the one and only MC Ishu. The ‘Nah Walk Alone’ EP is a meeting of musical minds with a meaning and a purpose, read on for the full story or jump to the bottom for the important part.

The duo have worked closely together since 2010 when they both shared studio and living space at the legendary art and music space Arsenal Studios in North London. Over the years they’ve performed live together many times, Dafoe has engineered Ishu’s vocals for other projects too, but this is their first EP together.

You might know Ishu has been a huge part of the UK dancehall, soundsystem and rave scenes since the 1980s, first coming to London from Jamaica with with the legendary Ari Up from the Slits. In 90s he released a string of amazing 12s as part of LIDJ a conscious dub reggae outfit. Then hosted for the mighty David Rodigan at 'Rodigan's Reggae' and many other systems and stations. More recently he's recorded legendary tunes like 'Belly Ska' with Mungo's Hifi, touring all over with them, and worked with Reggae Roast and lots, lots more.

Dafoe, an original part of the Senseless team, specializes in vocal recording, writing and production. His broad, bass heavy sound emerged from the Leeds underground scene and now lives on at his studio in Bristol. Dafoe's time spent producing and cutting dubs for soundsystems in his early years as a producer have stood him in good stead for honing his frequencies with razor sharp precision for maximum impact. He’s worked with vocalists including Sizzla, Max Romeo, Foreign Beggars, Warrior Queen and YT for a string of killer 12s. He’s played across Europe and regularly around the UK sharing stages with the likes of Iration Steppas, N Type, Oris Jay, Hatcha, Warlock, Mala and Congo Natty to name only a few.

Long nights in Dafoe’s Bristol studio have finally given us the ‘Nah Walk Alone E.P’, a collaboration that’s been brewing since they met back in London. The EP perfectly captures both their influences and and original vision for the project: politically charged lyrics meeting big, soundsystem bangers head on.

The E.P combines bass heavy one drop rhythms and dici-dub influences with 160BPM dub-jungle breaks, dark, minimal dancehall and grime influenced synths. Ishu's lyrics are conscious and current, expressing in song the mood of todays Great Britain. He balances the positivity and unity he feels among the masses against the strain being put on the people by world governments without the people’s best interests at heart. Lead track ‘State of The Nation’ rallies against Brexit and immigration policies and comes with a perfectly pitched video from POWLOBA putting Ishu in the role of news anchorman, dishing out the the hard word. Elsewhere tracks like ‘Nah Walk Alone’ and ‘Keep The Faith’ spread the message through unity positivity.

Remixes come from some of the underground’s finest all donating their skills for the cause: Warlock takes things dark and minimal with juke influences. Moocha’s mix is an expansive half time steppa, Merouac’s take on ‘Nah Walk Alone’ balances trap, grime and dancehall energy and Jim Bitch turns ‘Keep The Faith’ in to a classic VIP jungle rinser.

The message is loud and clear: an EP of turbulent force for turbulent times, and on to the reason this EP is being released right now. Ishu has been denied an official visa for overstaying and may be asked to leave the UK, going back to Jamaica where, 27 years later he has no family or friends. His home is here, his friends are here, his music is here in the UK. So to show unity for his cause, and utilise his platform as an inspirational artist and performer, all profits from this release will go to fund his legal team in his fight for justice. So if you have love for Senseless, Ishu or the underground scene please support this EP by paying what you can afford, or sharing with as many people as possible.

We nah walk alone.
